Consider this a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love each other.
A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love
Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The plot commences when the couple transition from the big city to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.
The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
